Nankumbi Lydia

is an 8-year-old girl in P2 who hopes to become a lawyer.

Lydia stays with her aging grandmother and many other children at Kitongo Village. Lydia’s father became a drug addict and struggles with mental illness. Her mother went away to look for work, thereby leaving all the responsibility of caring for her children with the grandmother who has no job. She works on her small garden by growing food crops for home consumption. When Kassanda Seed School started, Lydia decided to walk the 10 kms. from Kitongo to Jemba to study. Kassanda Children’s Aid has been providing assistance to her and our partners, John and Stacy DeVries, helped build them house. Lydia is very active in class and she is burdened with the long journey to and from school, but her dream of becoming a lawyer keeps her going.
